Extracorporeal Therapy for Pets

Extracorporeal Therapy for Pets

Extracorporeal therapy is an advanced treatment that helps filter a pet’s blood when the kidneys need support or when harmful substances must be removed from the body. During this procedure, blood is gently circulated outside the body through a specialized system, cleaned in a specific way, and then returned to the patient.

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis acts like an artificial kidney. It removes waste products and extra fluids from the bloodstream when the kidneys are not able to do so effectively. The blood passes through a machine that filters it, then returns the cleaned blood to the pet.

Hemoperfusion

Hemoperfusion is designed to remove certain toxins directly from the bloodstream. The blood flows through a filter with materials that bind to and eliminate harmful substances, making it especially useful in cases of poisoning or toxin ingestion.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis)

Plasma exchange targets harmful components found in the liquid part of blood, such as autoantibodies, immune complexes, or protein-bound toxins. The plasma is separated, the damaging substances are removed, and the healthy components are returned to the pet’s body.
